Greta and her Babies Like Hanna, Greta was one of a group of rescued bunnies from the Andover field. She, too, was pregnant at the time, and on August 15th she had seven beautiful babies -- two tan and five black. Two of Greta's babies were much smaller than the others, so we gave them extra nursing time. Greta was a great mom, and we were blessed that they all thrived, even the smallest. Once they got old enough that we were sure they'd all survive, we named them -- in descending order of size -- Pumpernickle (a.k.a. Nikki, the biggest), Pepper, Popsicle (a.k.a. Poppy, master of mischief), Pringle, Peanut, Pistachio and Piccolo (the littlest and the sweetest). The babies' cage is in the same room with our two large rabbits, Matt and Josie. One morning, to our horror, we discovered that the babies had escaped from their cage. We frantically searched and counted babies until we discovered that Mattie wasn't hurting them at all. On the contrary, he was *watching over* them, grooming them and letting them climb all over him. He is now their Uncle Mattie, and their Aunt Josie has followed his nurturing lead. Update: Greta has been spayed, and has officially been adopted by her foster Mummy and Daddy. Nikki is too young to be spayed yet, but will also be adopted to live with Greta. Piccolo has already found a future mom who can't *wait* until he is old enough to be neutered so he can come live with her. Every week, they enjoy a brief bonding session -- the adoption can't be official until the papers are signed, but we're sure this will be a wonderful home for our darling little boy. Pringle, Poppy, Pepper, Popcorn and Pistachio -- the five black babies -- are being lavished with love so they'll be happy, well-adjusted little bunnies, hoping to find great homes when the time comes. |
