A necessary evil

I really, really hate to be picked up.

This is not an unusual thing for a bunny. Most rabbits don't care much to be picked up and handled. I, personally, am afraid they'll drop me (no matter how much they tell me they won't, I don't quite believe them). And, being an independent kind of bunny, I just don't like the feeling of being out of control at all.

Think of it, if someone 30 times your size came and picked you up, wouldn't you be scared about it too?

I've done my best to train them that it makes me really mad. For example, I grunt at them, I squirm, I try to hide. And, after they put me back down, I go to my litterbox, turn my tail to them, look out my window and snub them for a while.

But, sometimes, they do it anyway. I'm working on figuring out why. Here's what I've come up with so far:

Every time I am picked up, it's for something nasty, like to have my tooth trimmed, (I have one tooth that gets really long and sticks out of my mouth), or to have my nails trimmed, or to have the fur around my tail cleaned up (we won't get into my personal hygiene here... we'll leave that to another entry).

When they pick me up to do one of these nasty things to me, I fight the whole time. I will squirm and growl and grunt at them, but they do it to me anyway. The funny thing is that, after they are done, I usually feel better. My nails are a little more neat and short, I can eat better, or, my bum doesn't feel so uncomfortable.

So, it's a necessary evil, and I will still squirm, but, I'm getting used to the idea that I won't be hurt too much if they pick me up.
