Quarterly Report February 2022

Official / General

Financials
Working with Suellen on a task list and will start looking into hiring a book keeper or accounting firm.
We passed $200k in donations this year which means we will require an audit.

We are discussing the need to file in additional states besides Massachusetts. We likely should start with New England and New York, then consider other states. If you have a “donate” button on your web site, some states consider that to be soliciting in their state. There are 14 states which have expressly stated that. Some organizations file in every state where they receive a donation.

Payroll tax is finally set up and state filings have been done through Gusto. Gusto is handling payroll, W2 and tax filings for us.

Shelter
Old shelter-
Everything has been emptied out, keys returned Jan 31. Waiting on deposit check to be returned.

New Shelter-
Everything moved in but nothing unpacked. Still need to sort out how we want to arrange things, but getting the permits is higher priority.
Feb 7 Planning Board Meeting- Occupants in Unit 4 sent a letter saying there are parking issues and therefor want our permit denied. Planning board wants to investigate parking issue and continued us to the next meeting, Mar 7.
Feb 16 Zoning Board of Appeals Meeting – we received approval for special permit. It takes 2 weeks to issue and then there is a 20 day appeal period.

Working with fire marshal on hay storage. He isn’t sure how to proceed. Hoping it doesn’t negatively impact us.
Working with BOH who thinks we have “medical waste” when we do not and originally wanted us to have a holding tank.

Julie is currently working at Suzanne’s until the shelter reopens.

Development Director Management
Suzanne reached out to someone from another shelter who knows HRN and has experience with being a Development Director. The person never responded so at this point we need to start fresh looking for a new person.

Foster Homes:
Foster Committee is working on expanding membership to help share duties. Data entry is the biggest hurdle for Palestina currently. Bethany Wilson has started assisting with medical record entry and Pam Weir and Liz Orenstein have assisted with data entry for intakes. Intakes are still high but less foster space is making it difficult to keep up with owner surrenders. Biggest focus for intakes is helping local shelters and ACOs. Kay Bensin would like to help recruit foster homes and set up.

Hotline:

Alice has taken over the lead on the hotline. We still need to switch over to Petstablished.
